This route is about 11 miles just for the one peak. This peak might also be called the South or West peak, (as there is an East and North peak I didn’t hit). The gated road (West Branch Rd on Gaia) was nice and smooth and gradual, great for a bicycle for the first two miles. I parked my bike when it got washed out. The washout was short, and it was smooth again for another mile, then turned to taller wet grass for a mile. Once I was finally at the end of the wet road, I found skid paths up the south ridge. The woods were good here but being late June the ferns are quite high. There was much moose sign and a herd path on the ridge. Very pretty walking on the perfectly flat ridge in all the greenery. I couldn’t see my feet but the footing was good. Amazingly I found the jar, I sure didn’t intend to look too long on the broad flat summit area. I returned the same way. It took me only 2:20 round trip for the 5.6 miles hiked from where I parked my bike. This was my second hike of the day after East Haven. |
