Amazing day snowshoeing deep powder in the Green Mountains. Monroe trail was a sidewalk from ski traffic - naturally someone found a way to leave deep divots from bareboot tracks. Breaking off Monroe Trail, Dean Trail was untouched, as was every trail until returning to Monroe trail later in the day. Dean Trl was 8-10” powder, trail was easily navigable; Allis Trail was a stunning section of boreal forest, again, broke trail 10-12”; upon hitting the Long Trail and heading southbound, snow depth increased from 10-24” in spots. Climbs were steep and slow to progress, many instances where steps were kicked and poles were plunged as anchors, step up and repeat.
North Peak of Mt Ethan Allen has a sign and a fine lookout east- cannot see neighboring Camels Hump from here. Followed the LT S several hundred feet beyond this small clearing to reach the secondary peak - which may be higher? Visited for proper due diligence. Found some rogue ski tracks at the secondary peak peak along the LT, but upon reaching the high point and finding no lookout I retraced my steps - even the short sections I lost the LT and simply ‘whacked/beelined straight upslope on the ascent.
Great day exploring some lesser travelled areas and breaking trail in proper powder -there is nothing like coasting downhill in kneedeep powder after the work of hauling oneself upslope earlier. Good climbing! |
