Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Friday, November 15, 2024
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked at Route 302 at the start of a fire road (sign "Groton State Forest") that makes a lollipop loop to the south base of the mountain (there is also a large state parking lot on the highway 0.1 to the north, with a gated road that connects to the fire road). I could not drive down the fire road with my Honda Fit because of some deeply cut water bars, but the road was in great shape and your average SUV could easily roll over them and drive down the road for a shorter hike.

Comments
Comments: Solo hike up Signal Mtn. Walked down the fire road, taking the east fork of the road (gated) where it branches off, passing an apple orchard, stone foundations, and a nice pond and wetland, to a point NW of the pond. From there I bushed up the SE trending ridge of the mountain through a beech dominant forest, avoiding a rocky headwall, to the second ridge knob where I found a cut trail (showing light evidence of ATV tracks and large diameter bike or dirt bike tires). The trail was infrequently used and vague in the deciduous forest, but clear in the coniferous forest higher up. Followed the trail up the ridge to about 3,100' just past a glade, at the S side of the Mtn where the trail forks (left fork descending west) and continued on the right fork to the wooded summit where there was a cannister. Descended via the same trail. It leaves the ridge near where I picked it up. Tried to follow it all the way down but but soon lost it. Bushed the rest of the way down to the road, hiked out (taking a shortcut through the apple orchard, where there is a good view).
