Nice hike revisiting Ascutney. Brownsville trail was lovely. Open woods and cloudy/foggy down low made for a spooky initial hike. No morning views from any on the vistas, but by time we approached the summit clouds were clearing to the west. Trace snow started after Knee Lookout. Never much snow, mostly slushy and wet snow. Barebooted the whole way, wife put on microspikes as we descended the summit towards West Peak. West Peak hang glide platform made a great spot for lunch when the summit and observation tower were so wet and slushy. Clouds cleared far enough to see westerly mountains and ski resorts from Mt Snow up to Killington still in and out of the clouds. Came back below the summit on Hang Glider trail and Slot Trail. Clearly less used than summit trails, and more snow on the these trails, but still not more than a couple inches. Views cleared to the east as we descended and could see Sunapee, Cardigan, and some of the southern Whites emerged out of the clouds too. Fun day, love Vermont. |
