1.4 mi. approach w/ 1,000 foot elev. gain, mostly mushy snow with a couple of bare patches. I micro-spiked this and changed to snowshoes at the gap. At first the trail is mixed monorail, ice, snow, and bare patches but becomes inconsistent rotten snow after that, with ice patches on the steeps. Surface gets more solid above jct. w/ Battell trail (from Lincoln side). Past the summit north on the L.T. the surface changes but is still decent going (went to the plane wreck, still snowed under).
Although there is still a lot of snow on the mtn. the difference since the recent rain is dramatic. More rain is expected tomorrow.
Only other hikers were the trail maintainer & friends. Hazy sunshine with Moosilauke , Franconias and Presi's looking good as well as L.Champlain & the Adirondacks. Temps 40'sF, light N wind. |
