Snow flurries that got heavier as we reached exposed part of Sunset Ridge trail. Walk up CCC road and Eagle's Cut Trail was comfortable with just enough snow coverage over ice. Sunset Ridge Trail was pretty perfect for Hillsounds/Microspikes and it was good to see a bit more snow further up. On top was windy and there was enough snow over the rocks and nearer the top of trail there was quite a bit of snow. No other hikers seen. No views, some snow squalls, felt some ice pellets hitting our faces. It was extremely blustery from the Laura Cowles trail junction to the Chin with gusts pushing us about and it was quite the challenge hiking to the top. Coming down from the Chin was freezing cold with the wind picking up and a bit of a temperature drop. We decided to take Laura Cowles down to get out of the wind. Some steep descents over blue ice areas but enough snow on the side of trail or did some controlled bum-slides. Overall, Laura Cowles had enough snow for good traction with spikes. Great to get down. |
