Comments
Comments: We were first on the Monroe Trail and there was a little over 2 inches of fresh fluffy-slightly-wet snow, more as one got higher up. Joe led the way with snow-shoes and Flo wore Hillsounds. Trail was an easy ascent. Flo did some postholding and had a few snow-balls under spikes. A charming young couple caught us up about 1/2 mile before the Alpine Trail junction, so it was nice to have them trail blaze the rest of the way. We saw them again coming down as we were nearing the Hut Clearing. Saw dog, a young boy and his mother at Hut Clearing. The final 0.2 miles had a very icy section that was a bit of a challenge but with some agility and holding onto trees (sorry trees)it was quite fun really (just wish we were 20 yrs younger). On summit, had lovely views of the lake and Adirondacks, but too hazy to see Mt Mansfield or the White Mountains. Really icy wind and some sun. Coming down from summit again was a riot with controlled bum-slides over the icy bits. Saw a young lady hiker turn around because of the ice. Going down a more groomed Monroe Trail was a blast - a quick descent. In all a gorgeous day and a fabulous day hike.
