Comments: It was an almost 3 hour drive for us, but as we got closer to the trailhead, the day seemed to be going down hill. We got to the trailhead and decided to go ahead with the hike anyway. The first couple miles of the Bucklin Trail are nice and mostly flat. Not long after the Bucklin Bridge, you'll come to a right turn that will start the UP. We heard it would get very steep. It became a steady UP, but we wouldn't say it was VERY steep. The hike got interesting when we hit the Long Trail and the skies opened up. It was sleeting and snowing pretty good. We ran to the Cooper Lodge to get out our winter gear. Wouldn't up know we decided to leave the Microspikes in the car, because it only October and the trail was dry. The spur trail to the summit is only 0.2 miles, but it's VERY steep. Add sleet and snow to those rock and it also becomes VERY hairy! We started out knowing we might have to abort if necessary, but we took our time and did make it to the summit. As for views there were none. LOL It was cold, snowy and windy, so we made a short stay and headed over to the Peak Lodge at the ski area for some heat.
The trip back down the spur trail wasn't as bad as we thought it would be. We made it down to the Cooper Lodge again and took a walk around the area seeing how the snow let up. Whoever came up with the name Cooper Pooper for the privy..that's funny!
The hike back out was on mostly light snow covered trails, but the further down we went the less snow there was. I would imagine most of the snow that fell will be gone by next weekend. It did make for an interesting hike though.
We did post a video of our adventure for anyone interested in seeing the hike. Just click the link...
