Parked at end of plowed part of west Lincoln gap Rd. and hiked up 0.5 to 0.75 mi to Long Trail, then north over peaks, down Jerusalem to car spot with group of 6 from RGoH. A few inches of snow in valley, 1 to 1.5 feet on ridge with moderate drifts. 2" powder above 2" hardpack & ice at low elevations. Up high 5" or so heavy powder above hardpack was too cold to pack down, loose & unstable under feet. We barebooted but snowshoes would have lent stability. Some icy spots ascending Abe & at lower elevations of Jerusalem Trail. Several other groups were hiking same day, almost all bareboot. Warming hut between Hanks and Cutts was open and heated. Temps hovering around zero or slightly below all day. Trail can be tricky to follow where it enters woods after traversing upper ski slope N. of Ellen--skiers have confused the route by skiing off into the woods in random directions mostly E. Keep to the top of the ridge and west--don't go downhill to the east. |
