Comments
Comments: Great day for a hike! The preceding several days of unseasonably warm weather yielded late spring-like conditions. Dry trail gave way to mud, running water, and ice/slush. It was dry mostly to the Dean trail junction, then muddy through the Alpine junction, then the snow and slush increased past the alpine trail to the Long Trail. The final summit push had a fair amount of wet ice due to the melting conditions, but enough bare rock to make spikes overkill.

Descent of that section might be tricky or nerve-wracking if you're a klutz, like me. Wind at the top was out of control--our original plan was to descend by the Dean trail but had to scrap that because the wind was coming straight from that bearing on the Long Trail. Standing--let alone walking--was a feat in those conditions. Turned around and descended the Monroe Trail. Definitely an interesting day to be above 4,000.
