Went for a quick loop up and over Short Mountain. We left the Grove on the Blue Red trail heading south from the pavilion which joins the main Metacomet (blue blaze) in a short distance. From there the trail ascends thru a nice forest with some interesting minor cliffs rising to climbers right. The blazed trail has an easily missed split to the right where the old trail section takes a more direct route to the ridge line. Once on the ridge, there are sections of trail that hug some significant cliffs making for an exciting stretch with fine views to the south and west, particularly now with the leaves down. On the shoulder of Short Mountain the trail turns North and again hugs some very large cliffs with excellent views to the West. Rather than descend the challenging section that drops to Millbrook Lane, we stayed high on the unmarked trail doubling back toward Upper Hart Pond and the Green trail and and back on the trail which runs just above the Grove road to the Pavilion. Was a quiet morning and we didn't run into any other parties. |
