Comments: First time hiking with Lauralae O but she can fly. The object today was NW Hancock from North Hancock aka Hancock. We had no problems on the trail portion going up and over North Hancock.

We put on rain gear because of the leftover dew from last night when we went off trail. Hiker Ed had provided us with a couple of good bearings from the top of Hancock close to magnetic north.

Picked up printable topos on the nh fish and wildlife site see http://www.wildlife.state.nh.us/maps/topo.html which have the magnetic and grid arrows at the bottom which are important to line up your compass to mag north.

On the way over we stuck to the straight and narrow of the bearing which made some travel difficult, but on the way back got smart and stayed to the top of the ridgeline and found easier places to walk where available.

One bit of confusion we had --was that there is a minor rise before you go back down to the col and then up to the peak. Do not be mislead by that and it was an act of faith for us to keep going when we could not see a peak through the foliage. As you climb the peak the herd path becomes apparent.

We found the sign, then wire and jam jar on top. We were the first to sign in since late 2011.

On the way out was ok I crashed several times and got hung upside down in a deadfall. Laurelae just had one scratch. I'll still picking needles out of my nether regions. Great day and rush in and out in 6 3/4 hours. Laurelae thanks for the company.

Looking forward to Thursday to do West Osceola.
