| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Parked at Caps Ridge lot off Jefferson Notch Road (no fee assessed anymore). |
|
| Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Standing/Running Water on Trail |

| Recommended Equipment: |

| Water Crossing Notes: |
None on Caps Ridge, Gulfside, or Mt. Clay Loop.
Sphinx Trail had multiple extended sections in which it was a brook. There was also a dangerous crossing above a gorge (could be very easy to slip on the wet ledge and fall off the side and into the water...ER would be best case scenario), as well as a few that were just barely rock hoppable on wet rocks.
River crossings onto and back off of Great Gulf Trail were just barely rock hoppable. |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Caps Ridge Trail is very brushy below treeline and most of the waterbars are completely filled in. The landslide on lower Sphinx Trail has been cleaned up in terms of blowdown, but water is flowing down the trail as a result. Navigation in the lower elevations of this hike was difficult due to the ridiculous wilderness blazing restrictions, which result in lost hikers and increased environmental damage (herd paths). |
|
| Dog-Related Notes: |
Not a good hike for dogs due to extended rough rock sections, scrambles, and ladders. |

| Comments: |
Caps Ridge Trail was slippery in the morning, but generally dry in the afternoon.
The Cornice was smooth sailing from Caps Ridge to Gulfside.
The upper Sphinx Trail had some slippery scramble ledges. The lower half of the trail was slow going due to being a brook in places and rough in other places. Also some rough spots in the section of the Great Gulf Trail used, including a few wet ledges in which a fall could cause some bodily harm.
Six Husbands Trail had a few wet ledges that made getting on and off the ladders a little dangerous. Otherwise, it was fine and fun.
A fall chill in the air made for smooth sailing. Summits generally in the clear in the morning, but fog moved in during the late afternoon hours. |
