Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Rock hoppable. The crossing over the West Peabody when first starting out on Six Husbands was a bit tricky. One member of our party took their boots off. Another crossing on the Sphinx Trail was difficult to find [thankfully someone had placed some orange survey flagging].
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Great Gulf Trail in good shape up to Six Husbands. Then a section of trail right before campsites was completely underwater. Six Husbands was fine. Sphinx needs to be brushed back and widened since it was a challenging trail to follow. There should be blazes at some critical turns despite Forest Service policies...just a few...otherwise I can see inexperienced hikers getting lost. At one point the trail was actually in a running brook! It is wet and treachorous. Once you get near the Great Gulf Trail, you reach a brook and have no idea where the trail. The trail actually turns right here and follows a dried up brook bed. Another good spot for a blaze.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes:
Bugs
Bugs: Sphinx Trail, perhaps because of all the water, was buggy.

Comments: Completely AWESOME day!!! The Six Husbands Trail was fun!!!

Did a loop to travel the Six Husbands and Sphinx trails that I had not done before. Itinerary: Great Gulf and Six Husbands to Jefferson, then Gulfside to Sphinx [awful descent!!!] to Great Gulf. Great Gulf Trail portion took FAR longer than anticipated. Trail finding was difficult to impossible down the Sphinx Trail. There are not any blazes and when the trail has you going down in a brook...it makes you wonder if this is really the trail. The trail needs blazes and cairns. It is VERY easy to get lost on this trail with all the cascades and unmarked crossings [thankfully one was flagged with orange survey tape].
