Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: many water crossings on upper Great Gulf portions - very slippery rock. Water Crossings on Sphinx were rock-hoppable.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Lots of work has been done on Sphinx - KUDOS!!!!! Top 2 miles of Great Gulf Trail NEED BLAZES!!!! I know it's part of the Great Gulf Wilderness, but, given the apparent landslide/avalanches, blazes are lost and missing. I had to trample alpine vegetation whenever I found myself off-trail. A few blazes would save some vegetation!!!!!
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: rocks too rough for dogs
Bugs
Bugs: a few along the streams of Sphinx & Great Gulf

Comments: Completely AWESOME presie day!!! Saw some familiar faces - always fun!!!

Did a loop to travel trails I had not before. Itinerary: Caps Ridge up and over Jefferson, down Six Husbands to Gulfside. Then, down Sphinx (not a bad descent at all!!!) to Great Gulf (at around 3600') back up to Washington via Great Gulf. Down from Washington via Gulfside to the Cornice to Caps Ridge. Great Gulf Trail portion took FAR longer than anticipated. Beautiful lake in there surrounded by the Great Gulf Cirque - truly a special spot!!!! But, once above the pool, trailfinding was difficult to impossible up the scree/rockslide slope that is the upper portion of the Great Gulf Trail. Few blazes there and a few small cairns. It is VERY easy to get lost near waterfalls/streams up the headwall. Took almost 2 hours to ascend the headwall and that was due primarily to route finding.

A great day for the presies!!!! YAY!!!!

NOTE: Greenough Spring running well (along Gulfside)
