Date of Hike: Saturday, July 14, 2012
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Plenty of room. The Border Patrol on I-93 caused a pretty good backup at least by rural standards. Pepper let them know he didn't like it.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant, Standing/Running Water on Trail
Recommended Equipment

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Rock hops all.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Scattered blowdowns, most step overs, but a few larger and higher. There were several multi stem across Isolation in its upper section. Spot areas on all a bit brushy. All trails had sections with running water in them but rock hoppable in those sections, and occasional mud. One mud stretch on Isolation just above the Rocky Branch intersection can be avoided by taking the lower/stream side branch of a fork. A lot of wood waterbars and puncheons have decaying but still provide some functionality in summer. But all in all the trails are good hiking for summer, unlike spring.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Pretty good day for Pepper. All that water beside, crossing or even on the trails made for plenty of cooling sip n dips. Add in an early start, lots of shade, easy grades and a breeze on Isolation and he was quite comfy on a warm day. He had fun reminding the rodent population schnauzers rule on the hike down Rocky Branch.
Bugs
Bugs: A couple of deerflies and skeeters were heard, but that was it. A nice breeze on top would have kept them away, but they weren't around at our many stream sip n dip stops.

Comments
Comments: We skipped the Engine Hill and smaller wacks, to maximize stream time and since Pepper had never been on the sections the wacks bypass. It turned out to be a great dog hike for warm and sunny weather and I'm glad we skipped my favorite route, Glen Boulder. Some of the nicest trail is along Rocky Branch which a wack normally misses. All stream crossings were easy enough, and great fun for Pepper. We had the peak all to ourselves, with nice if hazy views, and a comfy breeze. There weren't a lot of hikers out today; at least for our trail time. Congrats Pepper.
