rock hops |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Hard to say, trail wet and muddy from recent rains and fog. Some waterbars need cleaning; additional water bars needed in some eroding spots, and rock steps would be helpful in Spur trail's mud spots. No blowdowns. New section of Gale River had lots of slick mud; the old trail is better when the crossings are easy as they were today. |

 | Dog-Related Notes: |
Good day for Pepper as fog kept the temps around 60 for most of the hike, and kept the hot sun off his back. Sippin n dippin in lower sections, drinking water higher due to the rains, but he still liked some from a bowl on N. Twin. Saw 2 other big dogs on Galehead. |

 | Bugs: |
None really. Odd. |

Weather forecasts last night ranged from dire ones by NOAA to a more optimistic Fairbanks Museum report with useful timing of events. So I decided we could sneak Galehead in between the am showers and afternoon Ts. We drove up in light showers but they ended around 9am as forecast. The peaks stayed in the clouds, making for comfy 60F temps and reducing the chance of popup Ts, so we added the Twins. Light breeze on top. No views, but easy hiking.
We didn't see many people, a couple of Boy Scout groups and a few others, plus the hut framepackers. The sun came out at the very end. Given how heat and sun can impact Pepper, this really turned out to be a great day despite the lack of views. |
