Date of Hike: Sunday, July 1, 2012
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parking at the upper ski area lot, trailhead on right. Plenty of room as I got there around 2:30PM, only a half-dozen cars in lot, I was the last one out.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Easy rock-hops.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: You kidding? About the only thing to complain about here is the seemingly endless steepness after the upper crossing, and the rough footing on the final pitch to the summit. Rocket21, if you are reading this, have a cold one on me! Incredible rock work done in the middle and upper stretches, with rock-lined side drainage bars around rock steps, and so on. Others have not been kidding when mentioning the engineering marvel worked in several spots by Rocket21. Good footing almost all the way to the summit.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Should be an easy enough trail for dogs, bring water after the upper crossing though.
Bugs
Bugs: Mosquitoes in lower half were annoying. Nothing up high, not that I stayed long.

Comments
Comments: Part 2 of a double-hit-and-run, after the Osceloas in the AM. Hit the trail around 3:25, out at 6, mere minutes before a heavy downpour (only a brief sprinkle while on-trail though). Ran into Sue&Earl just below the upper crossing, finishing the back end of their own double-hit-and-run (must be the start of a new month :D). Good to see them again. Also saw a woman who I'd seen a couple times on the Osceolas in the AM, guess I wasn't the only one doubling-down on Waterville Valley today.

Nothing of note on this, just the monotonous climb to the summit after already doing 8.5 miles and over 3k on the day. Not fast, but not too slow either, 2 hours up and 1.5 down (knees were tired, lol). Father and son at the summit who came up from the Tripoli Road side, I'm putting that one on the to-do someday.

Humid day, saw some dark clouds North when I left the car to go up, brief sprinkle about 2/3 up, and some rumbles out to the East after I hit the upper crossing on the descent, but the rain held off until 2 min after reaching the car. Felt good to stand under for a minute or 2 (probably not so smart in an open parking lot with thunder, haha)! Temp also dropped ~20 degrees behind the rain which felt good.

Down to 10 4k's for a 2012 completion!
