Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All brook crossings were easy mostly on rocks
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trails in good condition except for erosion primarily on the Cedar Brook Trail. Lower part of Mt Osceola Trail has some new growth crowding the trail but it is not bad at this time.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Trails are good for dogs although I saw one dog that looked a bit exhausted with the heat on the Hancock Loop although water wasn't too far away.
Bugs
Bugs: Almost none on the Osceola leg of the hike. Lots of black flies on the Hancock portion of the hike. Perhaps Cedar Brook was the source for the flies.

Comments
Comments: I based the hike at the Greeley Ponds trailhead with hikes up the Osceolas and the Hancocks using a 3/4 mile stretch of the Kanc Highway to connect the hikes. The Osceola trails seemed to be pretty much unaffected by Irene whereas the Hancock trails had eroded sections especially on Cedar Brook Trail. Even in the most eroded areas the trails are passable with no extraordinary effort. The usual mud areas on the Hancock Loop ridge section can be crossed on logs, roots, and rocks or bypassed to the side. Expect steep climbs up East Osceola and up to and down from the Hancock Ridge including loose rocks below South Hancock.

Met the Student Conservation Association building rock steps on the Hancock Notch Trail. Had conversations with many other hikers enjoying the day out on the trails.
