Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Plenty of room today at the Lafayette parking near the TH. There were very few campers.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Mud - Significant, Standing/Running Water on Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: None unless you want to call avoiding the water in the trail as rock hopping.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There's a couple of blowdowns on Hi-Cannon, and in its upper section it needs brushing. There is a very obvious unsigned trail off Hi-Cannon but I'll guess from the WMG that it is old trail. I won't call it unmaintained since none of the trails are maintained. The sign at the Dodge Cutoff is on a broken post leaning on a bank but the sign does not mention the Dodge Cutoff. After being on several of the Cannon Trails, it looks like the state park blows its annual $50 hiking trail budget on signs warning hikers at the lake, peak or ski area. One is more likely to see Bigfoot on the trails than a waterbar.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: It was a wet day for the little dog, so he didn't need water or sippin 'n dippin spots. I thought I would need to spot Pepper on the ladder, but he figured it out and shot right up it. The Willey ladders look to be much easier for dogs. The rough boulders on both Hi-Cannon and Kinsman Ridge towards Lonesome Lake might be difficult for small and/or inexperienced dogs.
Bugs
Bugs: No problems today.

Comments
Comments: We started in drizzle but in the woods the water already on the spruce-fir branches overwhelmed it. But steady hiking and modern synthetics meant it wasn't a minus except maybe at the tower, where there was more of it with a light breeze. We ended in overcast conditions. There was lots of water on the trails running down the ledge section of Hi-Cannon and in the more or less permanent ponds in the upper flats, but we stayed on the trails, rock hopping in places, so I don't think we did them any harm. We passed one father-daughter team on Hi-Cannon and had a nice visit with Mountain 49 just below it on LL; otherwise we had the trails to ourselves until we got down to Lonesome Lake. It was a nice short hike for Pepper's 500th.
