| Trails: |
Zealand Trail, Ethan Pond Trail, Thoreau Falls Trail, Zeacliff Trail, Twinway, Zealand Summit Spur |
|
| Date of Hike: |
Sunday, May 20, 2012 |
|
| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Zealand Road open. A few spaces remaining in Zealand lot. Detour in effect from US3 to I-93 (using Route 141). |
|
| Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Standing/Running Water on Trail |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |
|
|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
All brook crossings were doable, though the Thoreau Falls and Zeacliff crossings each required a leap of faith. Zealand boardwalk has one approach submerged still. |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Cut out two blowdowns on Ethan Pond Trail and three on Zeacliff Trail. All sections of trails hiked are in decent shape blowdown-wise, though some could be trimmed back a bit more. Waterbars on Twinway from Zeacliff to the hut are completely filled in (couldn't even dig them out with my heel) and useless at the moment. |
|
| Dog-Related Notes: |
One scramble on the Zeacliff Trail may be too much for most dogs. |
|
| Bugs: |
Black flies were out at all elevations, but bearable. |

| Comments: |
Trails were snow free and generally dry and in good shape. The approach to the Zealand boardwalk is still flooded (for a good hundred feet or so...one can sort of balance along the embankment and use some floating boards to get to the boardwalk with today's water levels), but it looks like the materials for extending it are waiting at the trailhead.
Ethan Pond Trail was smooth sailing to the Thoreau Falls trail.
Zeacliff Trail had some pooled water immediately after the water crossing and one or two wet ledges higher up.
Twinway was generally dry with a few minor areas of mud. |
