Trails: Gale River Trail, Garfield Ridge Trail, Frost Trail, Twinway
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, May 5, 2012
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parking does not require a fee right now, but I believe this trail usually does, so expect it later in the year.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Ice - Blue, Wet/Slippery Rock, Ice - Breakable Crust, Mud - Significant, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Unstable), Standing/Running Water on Trail, Slush
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The water crossings were all pretty difficult, as the water is very high this time of year. Be prepared to walk up river a little bit to find a good path.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A couple big blowdowns, easily avoidable.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw several very happy dogs. All mediums sized, labs and such. Some parts of Twinway and Gale River Trail were difficult for them.
Bugs
Bugs: Got my first mosquito bite of the year. :(

Comments
Comments: Galehead is a disappointing peak, but South Twin was well worth the hike. We made great time and had a blast, but it was a very strenuous hike due to poor trail conditions. If I were to do another this early in the year I would definitely want some light traction. The ice coming down South Twin was very sketchy.
