Quite an exciting hike today. I got charged by a black bear on the way down. I was only about a tenth of a mile away from the parking area when I heard rustling to my right in the open woods. There were 2 black bear about 50 or so feet away from me. I froze. One turned and started away, the other turned and started toward me. I yelled and started to head downhill; it ran at me faster! I stopped and blew my whistle (Osprey backbacks have a whistle built into the buckle on the sternum strap.) The bear and I both stopped about 12-15 feet from each other. I could see his teeth clearly and the details of his eyes. Since he was standing on higher ground than I, our eyes were at the same level. After a few very long moments, he turned and walked off. I ran back to the car! |
