Got a late start and only chose this trail thinking it was mostly secluded from the winds. Which it was - until nearing the Garfield Ridge Trail junction, where the winds must have been 40 mph. Broke my heart to abort probably 0.1 from the GRT junction but it just wasn't feeling fun or safe especially since the hubby was struggling w/ muscle spasms and it was me + the autistic wonderboys against the elements.
Trace snow started right after the 1st long "stairway" on ascent, at about 1.5 mi mark. About 4 inches near summit. Miminal ice though. We ascended wearing just hiking boots but donned micro spikes for the descent, removing them halfway. -Still caught some great views up at Lafayette, Garfield and Cannon. It is always so restorative just to be here. |
