I parked roadside along Mast Road, careful not to block gate to Hedding Spur Trail which appears to be a snowmo trail. I was careful to park off-pavement |

Goal was to finally locate and view one of the state's large Black Gum Trees. This is not the state champ, and seems about the same size as the one in Fox Forest. Very cool to finally find it. There are others in here as well. I followed the instructions in the Big Tree book and was not disappointed. I went about .3 miles north on Hedding Spur Trail, then found a spot to jump off into the woods going west. Woods were pretty open with some typical swamp-type vegetation. Good time of year for this because ground wasn't damp. Anywho, after walking around .4 miles west, I found a scattering of Black Gum Trees and eventually the big one. I am going to guess the tree is around 3' across? Hard to tell. There is a little rot at bottom, and looks like maybe a porcupine had used it for a winter or 2. From the tree area, I just headed south to Mast Road, then roadwalked back to car. Total loop, around 1.4 miles. Very neat area! |
