There were a fair amount of cars in the WMNF lot at 7:15am but still plenty of room for more. When I finished the lot had more cars but still had plenty of room for more. |

I am always grateful for any day I get to spend in the mountains but every so often Mother Nature takes pity on me and gives me a DAY not just a day. This was one of those DAYS. The rain made things wet to start and the new re-route of the Ammonoosuc Ravine trail has some of the slickest mud. After 3 days passed, I finally reached the Gem Pool. Maybe not 3 days, but dang that thing just meanders all over the place. The rocks and slabs up to the hut were wet in some places and dry in others but I have done this enough in wet conditions that I have a system that works for me. I lucked out and had undercast behind me all the way up and just kept stopping to ooooh and ahhhh. Once I arrived at the hut things were starting to clear out and the rocks up to Monroe were nice and dry. It was cool and breezy enough for my hat and gloves. I had the summit completely to myself and couldn't even see any people making their way up in any direction. How rare is that?! As I descended a few hikers were making their way up and everyone seemed to be having a great day. I made my way up to Washington, passing more happy hikers. The summit was crowded but not insane. On the trek down Gulfside I had the pleasure to bump into Bill Cronin which made my day. White Mountains Royalty, big time. After chatting with him for a bit I made my way down to the Jewell Trail which was delightfully dry and I only saw 2 more people the whole rest of the day. These are the days that are so amazing that I would exist on ramen and tomato soup without complaint, so I could take advantage of them. I am still smiling as I type this out. |
