 | Water Crossing Notes: |
Flat Mountain Pond Trail has several water crossings. All were easy today. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
There is a cluster of blowdowns on Flat Mountain Pond Trail between its junctions with Bennett St Trail and Gleason Trail. Judging by the green leaves on the downed trees, they came down recently. A handsaw will take care of some of them, but one tree may require an axe. |

I walked the entire length of Flat Mountain Pond Trail counter-clockwise. The first half of the hike is mostly in the Sandwich Range Wilderness. The trail is narrow and rough in places. The second half of the hike is mostly on an old railroad bed (see Beebe River Railroad). From the pond, you descend only 1300 feet in 5 miles.
The highlight of the hike was the various views from Flat Mountain Pond. It's quite a large pond (elev. 2300 feet) and a great destination for a overnight trip. It was also cool descending the old railroad bed. There are still railroad ties and even a couple steel rails in the path. Fun hike. |
