Comments
Comments: Hike up to Avalon was pleasant enough, encountered a couple other hikers, summit was populated with a murder of hedge-fund managers. Dropped into the woods off of the Avalon trail after skirting around the south side of the cone, following a gulley down to the col (note: stay on the right side of the gulley, as this eventually will cliff-out on the left and crossing will be a bit more treacherous). Nice views of cliff walls extending from Avalon most of the way down to the col, as well as crossing a few weeping slabs dropping down from Field to the right. While I had read that the col was a bit of a mud trap, I found that in at least this mid-August it was damp, with plenty of moss, ferns, & fungi, but quite passable without saturated shoes. The ascent up Willard was unremarkable, and significantly less dense than on the way down. As I exited the woods, I was greeted by the throng of notch-gazers, as one would expect to find on such a lovely late summer day. The descent was even more unremarkable than the ascent, save for the Centennial pool, which was lovely as well.
