There were 3 cars in the lot when we arrived and only a handful more when we returned. Plenty of room to park. |

There are a few stepovers along the way. The stretch between Middle and South Carter could use a haircut. |

This is a good route for dogs with good footing for them. Not much water along the way so bring extra. |

None to speak of until the brief time we descended the Carter Dome trail and the sun was out. Then there were gnats but nothing biting. |

We started at 6:30a to avoid the rain that was forecasted to begin at 2pm. The trails were nice and dry and we made fast time up Imp and North Carter thanks to the dry rocks. Once we reached the Carter-Moriah trail, the views were gone and we were socked in with pretty gusty winds. Before 9am the rain started so we put on pack covers and rain coats and continued on. The rocks and roots were slick but with care the footing was good. The section between Middle and South is tight. By the time we reached South Carter it was raining more heavily. The trek up to Carter Dome was fast - the winds were strong but the rain had lessened. The rocks were slick. The sun came out at Carter Dome and we thought we were in the clear. We visited every view point as we descended and had the nicest views. Carter Dome trail to 19MB was still wet. Shortly after hitting the 19MB junction, the rain started again and we were in downpours all the way back to our cars. The water was pooling up on the trail and the mud increased. Despite the weather, we had an excellent day. I hope you all have hiking friends that happily hike the Carters with you, in the rain and still can spend the day laughing and joking. :) One more hike and Luke grids out July. Woot woot! |
