Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The goal was to follow Carl's route. I initially tried to access Marigrande rd from the west, but was rebuffed as there is 'private road, no through traffic' and 'you're on camera' signage at the junction with E Side Rive Rd - though the gate here was open. So we turned around and went up Success Pond Road. If you're reading this, you know what you're in for with Success Pond Rd. I found it got better after mile nine or so, and Marigrande rd felt like a highway compared to SPR. The entrance to Marigrande from the east also had a sign saying 'no through traffic, gate closed at the other end'. Followed Marigrande to the spur road. The spur road, other than a bumpy initial landing and a few small blowdowns was in lovely shape. I was able to drive it all the way to the end of the mapped road - with plenty of signs of recent maintenance to widen the road. There has clearly been tons more logging since Carl was here.

Comments
Comments: Tons of logging has changed the layout of these vs. Carl's report.

From the last landing, we followed the logging road west briefly before going up into a clearcut then into the woods. Good woods up South Chick and an easy summit. Headed NW towards the col with Chick and found the southern ridge of Chick entirely logged/clear cut. This was recent enough to not have any regrowth and other than the awkward footing that comes with logged areas, was easy to walk the clearcut up to the ridge and then to the summit, which still has some trees and a jar.

From here, we followed additional logging towards Bald. The logging 'roads' took us a bit further east than a straight line, but I was happy to have more intel on how we'd get back after Bald. Followed the logging roads across the drainage east of the col at about 1520ft, then up a clear cut and a brief whack to an old road heading NW up Bald. The outline of this road is visible from sat and we hit it right where it turns 90 degrees to the NW. Road was ferny and very wet in places, but helpful in other places, and a lovely heading taking us right up the mountain. Road petered out around 1950 and we whacked in good woods the rest of the way, navigating a single cliff band on the summit cone. Some nice views from up here and can really see the extent of the logging on Chick. Followed a similar route down, although we stuck on the road after the 90 degree turn, which was probably a mistake, leading us into thick/wet drainage. Followed a herd path out of the drainage back to the logging road, which we followed back to the car despite it's awkward/slashy footing.

Took us 3 hours even. 20 mins up S Chick, 30 mins from S Chick to Chick, 70 mins from Chick to Bald and 60 mins from Bald back to the car. The last segment was definitely the most annoying as you're kind of expecting an easy trip back to the car but the logging really slows you down and takes more mental energy. This route is going to be rough once the regrowth hits in a couple years.
