I was the second vehicle at Christine Lake in Stark around 8 am and the place was hopping with locals when I got back around 4 pm. |

Scattered blowdowns along Old Summer Club Trail, along with a brushy corridor above the Rowell Link junction. Percy Peaks Trail also needs brushing between the top of Old Summer Club and Percy Loop. Blazing and signage are still good on both trails. Noted both new and toppled small cairns along the open slabs on North Percy. |

Oh yes, there were many flying things and none of them fanciful. Mosquitoes were annoying at lower elevations. In sunny open areas, black flies were still a nuisance. They were particularly nasty at the summit of North Percy due to the lack of wind. |

Hiked the Percys from the south, a route I had only done once before in winter, so it was neat to see Old Summer Club Trail without snow. The initial snowmobile trail approach was wet and grassy but also appeared to be mowed. Above Rowell Link, Old Summer Club is a joy to hike, with very smooth footing for the most part through gorgeous, wild, and remote feeling forest. There is one scramble near the top but it is not difficult.
Getting up to the base of the open slabs on North Percy was wet, but the slabs themselves were mostly dry with some seeps in areas. Just watch your footing. There were some dark clouds overhead but it never rained.
The herd path up South Percy has not gotten any less steep or rough over the years. No hiker register at the summit this time (seems to come and go) and the view of North Percy is still as super as ever.
On the way down I did the side trip to Victor Head, which is a bit of a haul to get up to -- a 500 ft. ascent in 0.4 mi. The viewpoints are just ok; there is a framed look at the Percys and the views over Christine Lake are mostly blocked by trees. The prominent high point has a register.
I saw several other hikers in the area of the Percys and from what I could hear through the woods, it sounded like the approach from Nash Stream Rd. was quite busy. I didn't see anyone on this southern approach. |
