Started out in the rain, then sleet & eventually snow. First 2.5 miles were easy hiking thru wet, slippery leaves, rocks, roots and mud. Then the fun began with an inch of wet snow covering boiler plate ice! We put on our spikes here. Care must be exercised until reaching Kinsman Ridge Trail. Two to four inches of new snow made for a fast & easy trek to South Kinsman.
The return trip on Mt. Kinsman Trail was brutal with constant balling of spikes making them ineffective on the ice. The spikes fell off several times. I also took a couple of nasty falls. Would recommend crampons with anti balling plates.
The high point of the day was finding a PBR & Coke on our running board! Thanks so much Hiker Ed. |
