Trails: Downes Brook Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Tuesday, May 19, 2026
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Plenty at the trailhead off the Kanc. When I returned, one large truck was parked parallel and not head-in. Don't do this.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: I went up the trail as far as the first brook crossing, where water levels were still a bit high for my liking. This can be a tricky crossing even at moderate water levels. More agile folks could do it, but I am no longer a graceful gazelle. ;)
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: 12 drainages cleaned and six blowdowns removed. Most were small but one large tree just above the Mt. Potash Trail junction took some time.
Dog-Related Notes

Bugs
Bugs: Oh yes indeed. There were bugs. And they were delightful.

Comments
Comments: Got out to do some spring cleanup on my adopted section (lower 1.4 mi. from the trailhead to the wilderness boundary) of Downes Brook Trail but only went up to the first crossing of Downes Brook. It was pretty darn hot (near 90 degrees) and high heat and I don't mix. I will be back for the rest when the brook settles down and it's cooler.
