Comments
Comments: A friend needed Bemis and Nancy for winter so up we went on the old fire tower trail for my second time this season. It was completely opposite snow conditions from my last trip. With concrete snow after a long thaw and refreeze, I left snowshoes in the truck, which sounds crazy for this time of year but they would have made the tight bushwhack difficult and it was supposed to stay cloudy and cool, which it did, so no postholing besides the occasional spruce trap. Terribly thick woods from Bemis to Nancy summit, it took us 1.5 hours for that section that’s less than a mile. The little pond was interesting to see though. Great views from this side of Nancy. The herd path/ abandoned Nancy trail was easy to follow but very steep and icy with almost no snow left on it. Crampons would not be overkill for Nancy but sharp microspikes worked for us. At the ponds we split up and Ken said afterwards the Nancy Pond trail was fine except near the falls very icy. I went solo over Anderson and Lowell, thick woods but better than my last time. Fine views from Lowell. The worst was yet to come, and the steep descent off Lowell was relentlessly thick and steep everywhere above 2000’ and I kept getting pushed further into the drainage of Whiteface Brook. I ended up following it all the way down until I was only 0.7 from Sawyer River Road when I met the trail. I jogged the final 3.5 miles of flat trail and roads in only an hour. 10 hours total and a wicked satisfying trip.
