All of the crossings worth mentioning (2 on Ammo and one on Edmands) are tricky but manageable. Rocks are very icy, some of the ice surrounding the river banks and or rocks are safe to step on. Some look safe but are not. Hillsounds or greater, poles help. Light traction or better until summit of Monroe. Ammo has a mixture of hard packed snow with a firm crust surface layer to blue ice. There is a lot of blue ice leading up to and around the hut. The dungeon has 4ish inches of solid ice as a temporary floor. The ascent to Monroe where you traverse horizontally to the northeast ridge has a pretty steep firm "no fall zone" where a snow drift has glazed over. Good traction was enough but an ice axe in hand might not be a terrible idea. The fall would not kill but would most likely injure due to boulders being your crash pad. Rock spikes from Monroe to out and back of Eisenhower (junction of Edmands and Eisenhower loop). Descent down Edmands has a lot of high firm snow as it felt like a bush whack for the first 3/4 of a mile or so. Lower elevation of Edmands path and Mount Clinton rd. were a combination of ice and bare surface. Shot out to Tonia for gridding out both Monroe and the month of March on this brisk challenging day. |
