Like another report, trail is mostly ice or hard packed snow, I used rock spikes from the parking lot to the open ledges near the summit, then switched to my K-10s, which I wore back to the parking lot but wished I didn’t (too lazy to change back and forth and some ice was way too smooth for rock spikes to get any purchase, so I kept the K-10a on, I was happy to descent the ladders with them but the snow was sticky enough going up for the rock spikes to grab on.
I also got lost in the spruces all bent over between the ladders and Flume Slide trail jcn, but quickly found the trail each time and was able to walk on snow off trail up there weirdly without postholing. Warmer temps will be a nightmare up there. Post holes were easy for me to avoid but also had trouble on the ledges at the top of Flume’s actual slide, the monorail is huge and you kind of have to stay next to it and use every spruce tree possible to stay on the ledges and climb down then up, but it was doable with courage! Mostly great trail conditions due to hard snow despite the short and few difficulties. One of my favorite winter hikes yet! |
