The original plan was Zealand/Bonds traverse. The weather was fine - frequently overcast, temps in the low 30s, and no wind. The road walk is relentlessly long, but conditions are manageable - several inches of powder and packed powder over black ice. I barebooted this for a while then switched to rock spikes for the added traction. Zealand trail was broken out from the folks ahead of me (most of whom spent the night at Zealand Hut). Switched to snowshoes after the hut for the televators. The steep stuff levels out some after Zeacliff Pond. After that it's a mile or so marching through a sometimes narrow section of krummholz with poking/slapping branches at face level. The actual summit was packed down from all the traffic. Given the time I opted to skip the Bonds and head back. If you need Zealand or the Bonds (for Winter), now is a good time to grab them. |
