Two pairs of glasses (readers, I think) hanging on the trailhead sign. I’ll post a pic in the White Mountains Lost & Found page on FB. |

We wanted something without water crossings and Cannon fit the bill. After all of the rain last night, we hoped that the temperature drop this morning would freeze everything up, and it did! We set off around 1 PM and donned K10s at the trailhead. These worked great all day. The other two hikers also wore spikes…slightly less aggressive than ours, I think. The ice was pretty soft still, but full crampons would’ve worked well and if it gets colder might be a better choice. There was great coverage everywhere except for a few spots past the outlook which were down to bare rock (maybe 3 places for around 20’). Also, the only running water anywhere was in the first 75’ of the trail. Runoff has destroyed a short section of the monorail. The KRT around the “rim” was the most tedious section as the monorail was quite thin with a large drop-off on the left side. Some parts of it were unstable. We took the Rim Trail down (goes through the ski area) and it was much quicker going. There is still substantial snow depth, so if it warms up you’ll want snowshoes. |
