Light traction (microspikes) from start to finish today. You could have used snowshoes from about 0.5 mile below Starr King all the way to Waumbek, but light traction was just fine too. There are a lot of small and medium-sized postholes below Starr King and from Staff King to Waumbek, and you will probably step or slide into 10-20 of them probably. You have to focus hard to stay on the 6-8 inch monorail in that section. Only about 10-12 people climbed the mountain today, and everyone except maybe 2 people were just using light traction. The views from Starr King and the outlook from about 100-200 feet beyond Waumbek's summit are both still great. The entire trail was extremely easy to follow. |
