Comments
Comments: Great winter day in the Whites! Temps were milder, the day was sunnier, and there was less wind than predicted. The overnight freeze, which had been predicted as long as a week ago, firmed up the remaining snow at elevation wonderfully. An inch or so had fallen overnight, but all of it down low had melted off by afternoon. Gale River Trail is essentially bare up to the second water crossing. Above that, the nascent monorail was firm underfoot. Wore spikes up to both summits, but switched to Hillsounds for the descent down from South Twin. I carried snowshoes all day and didn't use them, but the televators would have made them a worthwhile choice for the climb up to South Twin.
