What a mess. The best trail all day was the ski slope heading to the Wildcat Ridge trail which was bare at times or had ice that was grippy enough to walk on without spikes. The Wildcat Ridge trail down to the hut was littered with snowshoe sized postholes. Why you would continue to hike when you're postholing in snowshoes is something god can only answer. The Carter Dome trail was covered in bareboot postholes. Now I'm well aware that all trails are covered in postholes right now, but these were right now the middle of the trail all the way up and over Hight as well. Postholes continued onto the Carter Moriah trail over to South & Middle Carter. Between the deep bareboot postholes, divets left by those in snowshoes (idk who needs to hear this but walking in mashed potato slushy snow with snowshoes doesn't exactly help the trails either), and sections that had melted enough to give away to rocks, ice and a badly beaten monorail, the trail resembled a snowbank in Boston versus any trail I've ever seen (replace the garbage with human & dog shit). We opted not to go to Imp Trail (only losers go that way, jkjk) but instead go back over South & Middle and head down Carter Dome/Nineteen Mile where we encountered very thick ice, rocks and a decaying monorail. I've finished a grid and I'm 60% done with grid two and these are the worst "spring" conditions I have ever seen. Thankfully we drank so many summit shots, blasted our lord & savior Megan Thee Stallion through a bluetooth speaker, and were able to twerk away any frustrations we were feeling. If you head out to get these peaks, bring sharp spikes (but also ones you don't care about), some Hennessy and humor. |
