Snowshoes went for a ride today and I used Hillsound Pros door to door. Most of Liberty Springs trail is a mess of frozen postholes which require doing the hokey pokey to try to maneuver around them. As the temps warmed up on the descent, it was even more "interesting." The packed snow did offer pretty good traction, but don't even think about looking up or you may be swallowed up in a posthole. The stretch of Franconia Ridge trail between Liberty and Flume had the best conditions - far fewer postholes and I may have even looked around for a second or two. There are some areas of ice up around the summit of Liberty that were pretty bullet proof for us garden gnome sized people that don't seem to weigh enough to get good purchase, so I just apologized to my spikes and walked on the rock to avoid it. This report will self-destruct by tomorrow morning and the snowshoes will be needed again. I am guessing we will get just enough snow to hide the postholes making this a minefield of epic proportions. |
