A FINE day in the forest for a large accomplishment! We had approximately twenty hikers and two dogs. I put on snowshoes immediately to keep my feet out of the water and was able to almost entirely avoid any gremlins. I suspect melting has occurred even in the woods that may make this a little more challenging now. Sections of trail are completely covered in flowing water or slush/water atop deteriorating ice. It's the worst type of April snow in early March. Trail from parking to summit of Wildcat A was still very firm and obviously well travelled by snowshoes all winter. By about the junction with CDT halfway in, most had put snowshoes on. All had snowshoes on by the time we began to ascend A. From A to D was not terrible but I was glad it was over by D. This has NOT been snowshoe broke all winter and whatever thread was so small and inconsistent it was a lot of post hole roulette in snowshoes. Even with 20+ sets of snowshoes, it's not any better and will only get worse with more traffic. The stretch up D is as soul sucking as I remember it, it does not get any better the 18th time you do it, I can confirm. As with other postings, water crossings are extremely elevated with water flowing atop and below ice and extreme caution (or complete avoidance) should be used for the time being |
