Peaks Mt. Chocorua (attempt), NH
Trails
Trails: Champney Falls Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, March 8, 2026
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Plenty of space at Champneys trailhead, but parking lot was icy. Traction recommended.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Spring Snow, Snow/Ice - Postholes
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Challenging with warmer weather, faster water, and unstable ice shelves along the edges of the streams. The main Champneys trail crosses and recrosses the stream but it is better to take the higher path to avoid this. We tried to go ice climbing at Champneys Falls but could not safely cross the final stream to reach the ice.

Comments
Comments: After failing to reach Champneys Falls for ice climbing, we set off up the path to the summit of Chocorua, but it was heavy going in soft snow (even with snowshoes) and we ran out of energy, so turned back before the summit.
