With temperatures above freezing at night and well into the 50s today (under bright sunshine), snowshoes were the way to go. But, as the old saying goes, Mt. Major is the place to hike when you're a non-hiker. As a result, I didn't see anyone on snowshoes (did see some snowshoe tracks coming off Straightback), thus the trails were getting littered with postholes. Saw one person in sneakers and shorts postholing close to their knees; must have been nice. Even the snowmobile trail (still open at the moment, but probably not by next weekend) wasn't supporting bareboots this afternoon.
Nevertheless, there's still full (except south-facing ledge) snowpack for now, and it seems like it won't be cold enough for anything to set up too much until Thursday night, so snowshoes are the way to go if you choose to go. Otherwise, probably a good time to pursue another hobby until spring proper arrives. |
