Trail was hard packed and crusty for the first mile. I bare booted until the steep part, then kept my snowshoes on for the traction and lifts. You could probably get by with just good spikes/crampons but I don’t bother to bring mine when there is enough snow for shoes. Off trail was not supportive and I sunk knee deep as I side-hilled over 1 mile to the Fool Killer. Much easier following my tracks back. The woods were not bad at the 3300’ contour. I only saw two other people on trail, one in snowshoes, one in spikes carrying shoes. Scaur bushwhack was very quick. Going back down the trail was hard on my knees but I resisted the urge to butt-slide, which would be pretty dangerous right now. |
