We put on snowshoes right off (after the bridge crossing) and kept them on all day. The trail was in great shape, nicely packed, and the snow was powery and light. The trench was about 6 inches to start and deepened to more than 2 feet the mile or so near the summit. The forest was smothered in swaths of snow hanging in large bunches off tree branches and collected in huge fantastical shapes. There was sporatic wind, which obliterated the tracks of the two hikers on snowshoes ahead of us, leaving 4-6 inches of drifted snow for part of the ascent. A few intrepid skiers recently cut some turns through the glades but none were out today. Overcast with intermittent sun -- no views except for the nearby peaks. |
