Two cars covered in the snow in the parking lot when I got there, which I learned belonged to a small group that spent the night at Garfield tentsite. The trail was very hard packed up the road and for the first couple miles, to the point where snowshoes felt bad to use for the first mile of the actual trail. Things softened up as I gained elevation though and snowshoes are warranted, especially for the last 1-2 miles. Except for one corner with drifting the trail was easy to follow and well packed making for a nice relaxing hike up to the summit and back. Surprisingly I saw only one other day hiker out there; I thought it was a fantastic day to hike Garfield.
My original plan was to *maybe* do Galehead if the ridge was broken out. Things seemed promising at the junction, but I ran into the group that broke out the trail to the tentsite and they said nothing was broken out beyond it, so I opted to just go back down. |
