Comments
Comments: Entrance to Ammo trail is flat and easy to traverse in microspikes. Last mile becomes progressively steeper and snow shoes would be a good idea. Unpacked snow on the side of the trail is approximately hip deep making it hard to step off when people want to pass (today was a very busy day on the trail). Monroe loop is icy and crampons would be a good idea due to the side slope. We were able to manage with micropspikes, but had to traverse carefully and slowly. Crawford Path is well broken out and easy to follow until the summit loop on Washington. Near the summit of Washington the trail is less defined and we met a few individuals having a difficult time finding the trail on the descent. Summit is clear and well traversed. Descent onto Gulfside is good, but we ultimately decided to follow the Cog over to Westside trail and then cut over to Gulfside because Gulfside trail is very close to the edge of Great Gulf and all ice--you could easily slide off into the gulf if you fell! This section is the iciest that we encountered all day. If you have crampons this would be the place to wear them. The alpine zone on Jewell Trail is a bit of a mess and requires snowshoes due to spruce traps every couple of feet. The boot pack does not follow the trail all that well until you reach the trees again. Once in the trees Jewell Trail is easy to follow all the way back to the parking lot.
