Fast walk to the Gale River Trailhead, where the snowshoes went on and stayed on until back at that point. Nicely packed cruisy trail to the hut, where I caught up to the pair ahead of me. From there was a different story. Me and the pair broke out to Galehead. We lost the trail and it got a little circuitous. Stay left when the tracks split. Trees in the face everywhere. Knee to thigh deep snow. On Garfield Ridge, there was a set of tracks that took the shortcut to the summit, but we never saw them up there. I took off after summiting to make my way up South Twin, which was also unbroken. Holy hell. The drifts were above me at times. It took me an hour to go the .7, which was a valiant effort. To North Twin was not broken (I couldn’t even find where the trail started), and I’ve heard it’s sketchy as hell right now with the spruce traps, so I skipped that. On the way down I considered heading towards Garfield, as there looked to be semi recent tracks going that way. Within a couple hundred feet they petered out and I was back in up to my knees. Nope. Down Gale River we go. Saw 4 others, 3 of which also went up to S Twin, so good broken out trail there for now until the next storm. |
